There is not a dearth of metaphors for language learning, and they are certainly of limited use, but one way of looking at the process is that of building a house. At first it will not be very comfortable, but after dedication and time, the L2 starts to feel like a second home, one in which you can operate and function just as safely, comfortably, and naturally in this second home.
