This process of getting used to Portuguese feels like slowly acquiring a second home, that will eventually feel as comfortable, though without the extra native-ness, as English. I can feel myself very slowly getting more comfortable, through sheer familiarity and repetition. And it's interesting to notice the moments when I still feel uncomfortable--when I don't understand the humor, or when I just start to miss English. The only way to get comfortable is to go through the stage of discomfort. A long stage, but well worth it, it seems to me.
